This actually is a specific job in marketing.

It's called E-marketing. Using IMs, Chatrooms and Forums to promote products through a false "word of mouth"

Ever made a friend through the internet and they always have the latest scoop about something and always IM you with "OMG you gotta buy this new (insert link here)!! Its so awesome!!" ?

They might be a marketer

They maintain specific persona accounts and are managed by multiple users who keep lists of friends/buddies to market to.
